It may look simple: wet the popcorn, scrape it off, and paint.
The reality is considerably more complicated.
The texture is only part of the finished surface. Underneath it may be adhesive, old repairs, damaged drywall, plaster, additional texture, or other layers that need to be addressed before the surface is ready for paint.
The amount of water used and the removal technique also matter. Too much water or the wrong approach can create unnecessary mess or damage the underlying surface. Experience helps us work efficiently while keeping your home cleaner and protecting the surfaces underneath.

Our 7-Step Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process
1. Remove the Existing Texture
We remove the existing texture as completely as possible, including the backing, when the condition of the surface allows it. Some contractors remove only the visible texture and leave the backing behind. We prefer to take the surface down to the gypsum board or plaster whenever possible.
If stubborn texture or backing cannot be completely removed, we'll address it through sanding and skim coating rather than simply covering a questionable surface.
2. Apply an Oil-Based Primer
Once the texture has been removed, we apply an oil-based primer. This helps seal glues and other residues that could otherwise cause bubbling, staining, or chemical reactions beneath the final finish.
The goal is to prevent what's underneath from becoming a problem later.
3. Lightly Sand the Surface
After the primer has dried, we lightly sand the surface to prepare it for the next stage of the process.
4. Skim Coat the Surface
We apply joint compound, plaster, or another appropriate material to smooth imperfections and create a consistent surface.
This is one of the stages where experience really matters. A smooth finish requires careful application and attention to the entire surface—not simply filling the most obvious imperfections.
5. Apply the Appropriate Primer
For drywall, we use PVA primer as appropriate. For plaster surfaces, we use an all-purpose primer. This helps create the proper surface for the finish coats and helps prevent peeling.
6. Spot Sand and Prime
We inspect the surface and address areas that need additional attention. That may mean spot sanding, additional primer, or repeating those steps between finish coats as necessary.
7. Apply the Finish Coats
