From Popcorn to Smooth: A Whole-Home Interior Refresh
The homeowners wanted to update the look of their home by removing the existing popcorn ceilings and replacing them with a smooth, timeless finish.
Popcorn ceilings can make a room feel darker and more dated, but removing them properly involves considerably more than simply scraping off the texture and applying paint.
The project ultimately included popcorn ceiling removal, drywall repair and finishing, ceiling painting, and interior wall painting throughout a large home of approximately 2,700 square feet.
More Than Just Scraping and Painting
The first estimate the homeowners received from another contracting company anticipated that the popcorn removal could be completed in roughly three days.
Once Tina evaluated the project, she knew the process would require significantly more time.
Removing popcorn texture can expose imperfections in the underlying drywall, requiring additional repair, skimming, sanding, and preparation before a smooth finish can be achieved. In this case, what was initially estimated as a three-day project ultimately took approximately a week and a half.
Paint It Forward followed a multi-step preparation process rather than simply scraping the ceilings and painting over them.
Because sanding and drywall finishing can create substantial dust, the walls throughout the home were carefully covered in plastic during the process. The homeowners were still able to live in the home while the work was underway, although the temporary containment understandably changed the environment while the project was in progress.
Creating a Truly Smooth Ceiling
One of the most important goals was achieving a smooth, consistent ceiling surface after the popcorn texture was removed.
Existing drywall patches and previous repairs can make this particularly challenging because imperfections that may be hidden by popcorn texture become much more noticeable on a smooth ceiling.
Tina and the homeowners were especially pleased with the exceptionally smooth finished result.
The garage presented a different challenge. It contained more significant existing drywall issues, and the homeowners chose a simpler level of finishing there rather than investing in the additional skim-coating required to make it match the main living areas. Even so, the finished garage was brought to a clean, presentable condition.
Completing the Transformation
Rather than stopping with the ceilings, Paint It Forward also painted the home’s interior walls.
This helped create a more cohesive finished result and avoided the possibility of visible wall touchups that are caused by damage that usually occurs when removing the wall masking.
The project included the entirety of the main interior spaces as well as the garage, with the level of drywall preparation adjusted according to the condition and intended use of each area.
