Staircase Transformation: A Precise Black-and-White Finish
Homeowners in Jacksonville's Arlington neighborhood contacted Paint It Forward after experiencing significant problems with a previous painting contractor. The earlier work had left areas of their home needing repair, and the staircase was one project that had not even been started.
Paint It Forward was brought in to fix the issues from the previous contractor and complete the staircase transformation, including the steps, handrail, balusters, kick plates, and the wall alongside the stairs.
The homeowners wanted a dramatic black-and-white design, but achieving a crisp finish meant carefully managing the transition between the two colors and protecting the surrounding areas throughout the process.
A Challenging Stairwell Required Careful Preparation
The staircase presented some unusual challenges. Because it connected the home's upstairs and downstairs areas in a partially open design, the entire stairwell had to be carefully enclosed during the sanding process. And the return vent for the home’s ventilation system was in the middle of the project space.
Paint It Forward built a plastic containment area around the stairwell, including zippered entry points, while making some strategic adjustments to allow the home's HVAC system to operate. The plastic around the return vent was carefully modified to maintain airflow without exposing the vent to paint or sanding debris and dust, and the HVAC filters used for this purpose were replaced daily.
Once the sanding was complete, the surrounding upstairs loft and living room areas were thoroughly vacuumed and wiped down.

Precision in Every Detail
The staircase was finished in an ebony-black stain, with white accents on the balusters and kick plates. The handrail was also finished in ebony black.
The black and white areas required careful, systematic work and precise technique to create clean transitions without bleeding or blurring between colors. Because of the nature of the staircase, the work had to be completed in a deliberate top-to-bottom sequence.
The result was a dramatic transformation with a crisp, modern black-and-white appearance.
When Something Goes Wrong, Knowing How to Fix It Matters
During the project, some ebony stain accidentally seeped past a thin plastic barrier and reached a nearby white cabinet and the wall beside the staircase.
Rather than allowing the mistake to become a larger problem, Tina reacted quickly. The stain was completely removed from the cabinet, and the affected wall was repainted. The issue was fixed as if it never happened.
It's an important part of professional painting work: mistakes can happen on even the most carefully managed projects. What matters is recognizing them quickly, knowing how to correct them, and taking responsibility for the finished result.
